This dataset comprises the final output (updated on 30 September 2016) of the broad-scale habitat map (EUSeaMap) created as part of the EMODnet Seabed Habitats (http://www.emodnet.eu/seabed-habitats).
The map was produced using a "top-down" modelling approach using classified habitat descriptors to determine a final output habitat.
Habitat descriptors differ per region but include:

The map was produced using a "top-down" modelling approach using classified habitat descriptors to determine a final output habitat.
Habitat descriptors differ per region but include: Biological zone, Energy class, Oxygen regime, Salinity regime, Seabed Substrate, Riverine input.
Habitat descriptors (excepting Substrate) are calculated using underlying physical data and thresholds derived from statistical analyses or expert judgement on known conditions.
The model is produced in Arc Model Builder (10.1). For more information on the modelling process please read the EMODnet Seabed Habitats
The model was created using raster input layers with a cell size of 0.002dd (roughly 250 meters). The model includes the sublittoral zone only; due to the high variability of the littoral zone, a lack of detailed substrate data and the resolution of the model, it is difficult to predict littoral habitats at this scale.
The map follows the EUNIS 2007-11 classification system where it is appropriate.The data are presented in the EUNIS classification system where possible, and amalgamated into the MSFD predominant habitats. The attributes also contain information on the classified habitat descriptors (e.g. biological zone, substrate type, etc.) used to arrive at the final habitat type. The attribute table includes all fields from the EMODnet Seabed Habitats Translated Habitat Data Exchange Format.
The EUNIS habitat map layers are compiled by JNCC on behalf of EMODnet Seabed Habitats to produce a single dataset of habitat maps containing data in the European standard EUNIS classification system.
The differences in general between the 2012 version and this 2016 last release of EUSeaMap encompass these key areas:
• Current geological information (using the latest EMODnet Geology releases as a model input)
• Improved physical and biological data to drive the class thresholds (for example biozones and energy levels)
• Extended coverage (the 2016 version adds the Eastern Mediterranean, Black Sea and Arctic waters)- Spatial Representation Type
