The new version of the Tools4MSP Geoplatform is now available at the following URL geoplatform.tools4msp.eu. The use of the current site for the creation of new contents is now discouraged. However this site will continue to remain active and the resources (layers, maps, users) will continue to be accessible.
Title
Small scale fishery (Low ≤12 m)
Abstract

This map shows the distribution of the fishing pressure of small-scale fisheries for vessels with Loa (length overall) ≤12 m (Kavadas and Maina, PERSEUS Project).
On the basis of data available in the framework of ADRIAMED WG on Small-scale fisheries it is possible to assume that more than 90% of vessels have Loa ≤12 m.
The classification of fishering effort is:
5 very low
4 low
3 medium
2 high
1 very high
The method used is the Multi-criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) combined with GIS.

Purpose

The purpose of this approach is to assess the spatial distribution of the small-scale fishing pressure in the Mediterranean, and especially in areas (e.g. Greece, Croatia) with extended coastal zone, small isolated ports, many islands, with limited employment opportunities. and low capital investment.

Data Quality

This methodology combines MCDA methods (AHP, Fuzzy logic) and the analytical tools of GIS (WLC, spatial interpolation etc.). If primary data of temporal coastal vessels locations do not exist, it is one of the most suitable methods of mapping the distribution of FP from coastal fisheries. Is quite easy to expand the methodology by taking into account other parameters (meteorological data etc.) or to enrich with primary data. The estimation of fishing effort from coastal fisheries in days can be estimated by fishing pressure from coastal fisheries index (under investigation). Also this methodology could be applied in other fishing techniques or fleet segments (trawlers, purse seiners etc.) in case that VMS data are unavailable or to apply this method to real VMS data for comparison reasons.
